  • How old should I be to obtain a definitive driver’s license?

The baseline age to obtain a driver’s license is 18 for A and B Categories and 21 fore other categories. 

  • How old should I be to obtain a provisional driver’s license

You must be 18 years of age in order to be able to obtain a provisional driving license

  • In many countries, if I have money I can pay (bribe) and get a license for free, can I do this in Rwanda?

Rwanda has a zero tolerance against corruption, you will most likely be arrested by whoever you will try to give money, we recommend that you follow due legal process. You can either attend a driving school or use our edrivingschool.org courses to prepare for exams.

  • Where should I apply for a driver’s license

Driver’s licensing is managed by the Rwanda National Police – Traffic Unit, however all applications are done at irembo portal (irembo.gov.rw), this is where you apply to sit for a provisional license exam, a definitive license exams, etc.  

  • Do I need a provisional license to obtain a definitive license

Yes, you do.One is required to obtain a category onlye after obtaining the previous category only with the exception of F which only requires having only obtained a provisional license. 

  • What is the difference between a provisional license and a definitive driver license.

   A provisional license is a license that you obtain after passing the driving license theory exam. After obtaining this exam you are allowed to start learning how to drive sitting in the driver seat provided you are with a licensed driver. A definitive driver license is a driver’s license that you obtain after passing the practical driving exam.

  • What is irembo Portal

Irembo means gateway in Kinyarwanda, it is an online platform that was charged with the government to bring online and modernize government services, it is where you register to both take the provisional driving license and definitive driving license

  • Where can I find information about obtaining a driving license

There are multiple resources online, we provide links to different websites that offer free and paid information, practice exams, etc. We recommend to always consult the National Gazette which constitutes the highway code comprising a Handbook for complete body of knowledge regarding road and traffic information. You can also consult our website for more information.

  • I just moved in Rwanda with a valid driving license, can I use it to drive in Rwanda?

          If it is an international driving license you will be able to drive temporarily for one year. We recommend that you contact the Rwanda National Police, Department of Traffic Police and Road Safety (Traffic Unit) for specific information regarding your case.

  • Can I transfer my international driver’s license to a Rwanda driver’s license without taking a test?

It depends, the best way to find out would be to contact the Rwanda National Police, Department of Traffic Police and Road Safety (Traffic Unit) for specific information regarding your case.

  • Do I need to take a driving course to obtain a driver’s license?

No this is not a requirement. We at eDrivingSchool.org however encourage this. You have plenty of options, you can either go in a traditional driving school or take one of our driving courses here at edrivingschool.org. 

  • Is eDrivingSchool.org affiliated with Rwanda National Police – Traffic Unit or any other government agency? 

No, edrivingschool.org is private organization that is not affiliated to any state agency or government. The information we provide are as they are, though we do our best to provide you with the most accurate information, we shall never be liable for the info we provide to you, it is still your responsibility to cross check and use the info we provide with your own caution.
